I would like to share with you an article I read recently about some research on how yoga practice may help manage type 2 diabetes.
Due to the nature of the research it was carried on small size samples, however, the results show that yoga had positive physiological and psychological effects, as well as positive effects on behaviour changes which supported managing symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Yoga positively impacted aspects of the nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system. Reported positive changes that also helped manage aspects of type 2 diabetes included:
- Improved mood
- Reduced stress
- Decreased risk factors including reduced body weight, reduced blood pressure, and reduced heart rate
- Increase in positive behaviours including: increased exercise participation and maintenance of appropriate diet
- Improved immune function
- Reduced stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline
- Better insulin balance — more insulin secretion and less insulin resistance
